لَا حَوْلَ وَلَا قُوَّةَ إِلَّا بِاللّٰهِ الْعَلِيِّ الْعَظِيمِ
Lā ḥawla wa-lā quwwata illā bi-llāhi l-ʿAliyyi l-ʿAẓīm.
There is no might and no power except with Allah, the Most High, the Magnificent.
Source: Sahih al-Bukhari 4205 (sahih (authentic) hadith).
Narrated by Abu Musa al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him). (Sahih al-Bukhari, Maghazi 38/4205; Sahih Muslim, Dhikr 44/2704)
Abu Musa al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) relates: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me, 'Shall I not tell you of a treasure from the treasures of Paradise? Say: La hawla wa la quwwata illa billah'" (Sahih al-Bukhari, Maghazi 38/4205; Sahih Muslim, Dhikr 44/2704).
This dhikr, known as the hawqalah, is a treasure from the treasures of Paradise. A person stands in need of Allah's power in every matter. His own strength suffices for nothing; might and power come from Allah alone.
This dhikr is recited especially in the following situations: on meeting a difficult circumstance, on hearing of an affliction, on feeling powerless, and in response to "Hayya ala's-salah" and "Hayya ala'l-falah" while the adhan is being called.
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) recited this dhikr abundantly and described it as a treasure of Paradise.
Might and power are only with Allah, the Most High, the Magnificent. Let me leave off relying on my own strength, O my Lord. Teach me to depend on You in every work of mine and in every decision I make. Do not leave me to collapse in hardship; grant me never to let this dhikr leave my tongue. Do not let me forget that might and power are from You alone, O my Lord. Amin.
