اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللّٰهِ اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ يَا نَبِيَّ اللّٰهِ اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ يَا خِيرَةَ اللّٰهِ مِنْ خَلْقِهِ
As-salāmu ʿalayka yā Rasūla llāh. As-salāmu ʿalayka yā Nabiyya llāh. As-salāmu ʿalayka yā khīrata llāhi min khalqih.
Peace be upon you, O Messenger of Allah! Peace be upon you, O Prophet of Allah! Peace be upon you, O one whom Allah chose from among His creation!
Source: Sunan Abi Dawud 2041 (hasan (good) hadith).
This is the dua recommended for those who visit the grave of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). (Sunan Abi Dawud, Manasik 96/2041)
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever visits me, my intercession becomes due for him" (al-Daraqutni, Sunan II/278). Pilgrims who visit the Prophet's Mosque in Medina give the greeting of peace at the Prophet's noble grave.
When approaching the noble grave one should be well-mannered, calm and full of reverence. One stands with the face turned towards the noble grave and gives the greeting of peace. The greeting of peace is also given at the graves of Abu Bakr and Umar (may Allah be pleased with them).
This visit is not a pillar of hajj or umrah; however, it is very important for Muslims who come to Medina to make it. The hadith "Between my house and my pulpit is one of the gardens of Paradise" (Sahih al-Bukhari, Fadl as-Salah 5) shows the virtue of the Rawdah al-Mutahharah.
Peace be upon you, O Messenger of Allah! Peace be upon you, O Prophet of Allah! Peace be upon you, O best of created beings! For the honour of visiting him, forgive me and grant me his intercession, O Lord. Amin.
