Inna'ṣ-ṣafā wa'l-marwata min shaʿāʾiri'llāh.
Lā ilāha illā Allāhu waḥdahu lā sharīka lah. Lahu'l-mulku wa lahu'l-ḥamdu wa huwa ʿalā kulli shayʾin qadīr. Lā ilāha illā Allāhu waḥdah. Anjaza waʿdahu wa naṣara ʿabdahu wa hazama'l-aḥzāba waḥdah.
"Indeed, Safa and Marwah are among the symbols of Allah." (al-Baqarah 158)
There is no god but Allah. He is One, He has no partner. To Him belongs the dominion and to Him belongs all praise. He has power over all things. There is no god but Allah, He is One. He fulfilled His promise, He aided His servant, and He alone defeated the confederate armies.
Source: Sahih Muslim 1218 (sahih hadith).
Narrated by Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him). This is the practice of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) during the Farewell Hajj. (Sahih Muslim, Hajj 147/1218)
Describing the Farewell Hajj, Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) drew near to Safa he said, 'Inna'ṣ-ṣafā wa'l-marwata min shaʿāʾiri'llāh — I begin with what Allah commanded,' and climbed Safa. He rose until he could see the Kaaba, turned toward the qiblah, and pronounced the tawhid and the takbir" (Sahih Muslim, Hajj 147/1218).
The saʿy is performed in remembrance of Hajar's search for water for her son Ismail. One goes from Safa to Marwah and from Marwah to Safa seven times. At every ascent of Safa one turns toward the Kaaba and recites this dua. The dua is repeated three times, and in between one makes dua in one's own language.
Safa and Marwah are among the symbols of Allah. There is no god but Allah, He is One, He has no partner. He fulfilled His promise and aided His servant. Make me too a recipient of Your aid, and fulfil Your promise for me as well, O Lord. Amin.
