اَللّٰهُمَّ أَهِلَّهُ عَلَيْنَا بِالْأَمْنِ وَالْإِيمَانِ وَالسَّلَامَةِ وَالْإِسْلَامِ رَبِّي وَرَبُّكَ اللّٰهُ
Allāhumma ahillahū ʿalaynā bi-l-amni wa l-īmāni wa s-salāmati wa l-Islām. Rabbī wa Rabbuka llāh.
O Allah! Cause this crescent to rise over us with safety, faith, well-being and Islam. My Lord and your Lord is Allah.
Source: Sunan Abi Dawud 2358 (hasan [good] hadith).
Our Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) recited this dua whenever he saw the new crescent. The same dua is recited for the crescent of Ramadan as well.
The month of Ramadan is the blessed month in which the Noble Qur'an was sent down (al-Baqarah 185). When our Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw the crescent of Ramadan, he would recite this dua and welcome Ramadan.
The acts of worship recommended in the month of Ramadan are: fasting, performing the tarawih prayer, reciting the Qur'an, entering i'tikaf, giving charity, and making abundant dua and seeking forgiveness.
Our Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When the month of Ramadan comes, the gates of Paradise are opened, the gates of Hell are closed, and the devils are put in chains" (Sahih al-Bukhari, Sawm 5; Sahih Muslim, Siyam 1).
The first ten days of Ramadan are mercy, the second ten days are forgiveness, and the last ten days are deliverance from Hell.
O Allah! Cause this month of Ramadan to rise over us with safety, faith, well-being and Islam. Accept our fasts and make our tarawih prayers acceptable. Grant us a share of the blessing of this blessed month, O Lord. Amin.
