Source: al-Bayhaqi, Shu'ab (a text transmitted in the classical dua books).

Rajab is the seventh month of the Hijri calendar and the first of the three months (Rajab, Sha'ban, Ramadan). When the month of Rajab arrived, our Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would recite this dua and ask Allah to let him reach Ramadan.

This dua names three months together: Rajab, for which blessing is asked; Sha'ban, which is to be made abundant in blessing; and Ramadan, which one asks to reach. This shows that the months form a period of preparation in which each follows the other. Rajab is the preparation, Sha'ban the interval, and Ramadan the goal.

Rajab is also known as "Rajab al-Fard" (Rajab the solitary), because the other sacred months (Dhu al-Qa'dah, Dhu al-Hijjah, Muharram) come one after another, while Rajab comes on its own.

In this month it is recommended (mustahabb) to fast, to perform voluntary prayers, and to engage in abundant dhikr and dua. The first Friday night of Rajab is Laylat al-Ragha'ib, and its 27th night is Laylat al-Mi'raj.

Dua in English

O Allah! Make the months of Rajab and Sha'ban blessed for us; in these months accept our acts of worship and forgive our sins. Bring us to Ramadan in health and in faith. Grant us that we spend Ramadan with the night prayer, with fasting, with the Qur'an and with good deeds. Illuminate our hearts and accept our deeds. Record these three months as goodness in our lifetime, and let us reach the nights of Ragha'ib, Mi'raj and Qadr, O Lord. Amin.
