Meaning

O Allah! All praise is Yours. You are the Sustainer of the heavens, the earth and all who are in them. All praise is Yours. You are the Light of the heavens, the earth and everything in them. All praise is Yours. You are the Ruler and Owner of the heavens, the earth and all who are in them. All praise is Yours. You are the Truth, Your promise is true, the meeting with You is true, Your word is true, Paradise is true, Hell is true, the prophets are true, Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is true, and the Hour is true.

O Allah! To You I have submitted, in You I have believed, upon You I have relied, to You I have turned, with Your help I have contended, and to You I have appealed for judgement. Forgive me what I have done before and what I have left behind, what I have hidden and what I have made known. You are the One who brings forward and You are the One who puts back. There is no god but You. There is no power and no strength except by relying on Allah.

Source: Sahih al-Bukhari 1120 (sahih [authentic] hadith).

Narrated by Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him): "When our Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) rose at night for the tahajjud prayer, he would recite this dua." (Sahih al-Bukhari, Tahajjud 1, Tawhid 35; Sahih Muslim, Musafirin 199; Sunan Abi Dawud, Salat 343)

Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) relates: "When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) rose for tahajjud at night, he would say this" (Sahih al-Bukhari, Tahajjud 1). This dua is the first intimate address of the servant who wakes in the darkness of the night and turns to his Lord. The tahajjud prayer is a voluntary act of worship that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) never abandoned, and it is the most meritorious of the night prayers.

In the Noble Qur'an those who rise at night for worship are praised: "They used to sleep but little of the night, and in the hours before dawn they would seek forgiveness" (adh-Dhariyat 17-18). Likewise, with the ayah "O you who wrap yourself in a cloak! Rise at night, except for a small part of it" (al-Muzzammil 1-2), tahajjud was commanded to our Prophet.

The most striking feature of this dua is that it affirms the existence of Allah and the truth of His promise, the reality of Paradise and Hell, the truthfulness of the prophets, and the certainty of the prophethood of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). Waking at night and reciting this dua is a moment in which the believer renews his faith and keeps his consciousness of servanthood alive before his Lord. This intimate address of the servant, alone with Allah in the silence of the night, is the finest expression of sincerity and humility.

Dua in English

O Allah, at this hour of the night I have turned to You. You are the Lord of the heavens and the earth, their Light and their Ruler. You are the Truth, Your promise is true, Paradise and Hell are true. In You I have believed, upon You I have relied, to You I have submitted. Forgive my past and future sins, my hidden and open faults. Keep me constant in worship at night and protect me from abandoning the tahajjud prayer. Illuminate this night and open the morning with goodness, O Lord. Amin.
