(For a deceased woman one says "lahā", and for a child "li-hādhā aṣ-ṣaghīr")
Allāhumma ighfir lahu wa-rḥamhu wa-ʿāfihi wa-ʿfu ʿanhu wa-akrim nuzulahu wa-wassiʿ mudkhalahu wa-ghsilhu bi-l-māʾi wa-th-thalji wa-l-baradi wa-naqqihi mina al-khaṭāyā kamā naqqayta ath-thawba al-abyaḍa mina ad-danas. O Allah! Forgive him, have mercy on him, grant him well-being, pardon his faults, be generous in Your hospitality to him, and widen his grave. Wash him with water, snow and hail, and cleanse him of his errors and sins as a white garment is cleansed of dirt. Give him a home better than his home, a family better than his family, and a spouse better than his spouse. Admit him into Paradise, and protect him from the punishment of the grave and from the punishment of Hell.
Source: Sunan Abi Dawud 3201 (a sahih (authentic) hadith).
Awf ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: "Our Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) led a funeral salah. During it I heard this dua and memorised it." (Sahih Muslim, Jana'iz 85; Sunan Abi Dawud, Jana'iz 3201; Jami' at-Tirmidhi, Jana'iz 1024)
Awf ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) relates: "Our Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) led a funeral salah (prayer) and recited this beautiful dua. When I heard this dua I said within myself, 'If only I were the one who had died!'" (Sahih Muslim, Jana'iz 85). These words of the Companion show how powerful the dua is.
The funeral salah is the last duty owed to a deceased Muslim, and it is a collective obligation (fard kifayah). It begins with the takbir; there is no bowing or prostration in it. After the four takbirs, this dua or a similar one is recited. Our Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) instructed that in the funeral salah one should pray for the deceased person's pardon, forgiveness and entry into Paradise.
What stands out in this dua is that better things are asked for the deceased than those he possessed in this world. The phrases "a home better than his home, a family better than his family, a spouse better than his spouse" emphasise that the blessings of the hereafter are superior to the blessings of this world. The phrase "wash him with water, snow and hail" means to make him completely pure; it is a dua for being cleansed of sins.
O Allah, forgive this believing brother of ours, have mercy on him and pardon his sins. Protect him from the distress of the grave, from loneliness, and from the questioning of the angels of interrogation. Fill his grave with light and widen it. Bestow upon him in the hereafter what is better than what he possessed in this world. Admit him into Paradise and protect him from Hell. Grant us too a good death and join us to Your accepted servants, O my Lord. Amin.
