Meaning

O Allah! Include me among those whom You have guided and kept firm upon the straight path. Grant me well-being together with those to whom You have granted well-being. Take me into Your care together with those whom You have taken into Your care. Bestow blessing upon what You have given me. Protect me from the evil of what You have decreed. Truly You decree and no decree is passed against You. Whomever You help is not humiliated, and whomever You are not pleased with cannot be honoured. Abundant are Your blessing and Your bounty, and greatly exalted is Your glory.

Source: Jami' at-Tirmidhi 3566 (sahih [authentic] hadith).

Narrated by al-Hasan ibn Ali (may Allah be pleased with him): "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) taught me certain sentences of dua, and I recite them in the qunut of the witr prayer." (Sunan Abi Dawud, Witr 5/1425; Jami' at-Tirmidhi, Witr 10/464)

al-Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him) relates: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) taught me these sentences of dua himself and advised me to recite them in the qunut of the witr prayer." This hadith shows that our Prophet taught the duas personally even to his own grandchildren. al-Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him) recited this dua in the witr prayer throughout his life (Sunan Abi Dawud, Witr 5/1425; Jami' at-Tirmidhi, Witr 10/464).

This dua is an intimate address to Allah. It contains such important themes as asking for guidance, requesting well-being, taking refuge in Allah's protection, seeking blessing, asking to be protected from the evils that may come with destiny, submitting to Allah's decree and acknowledging His exaltedness. Reciting this dua in the witr prayer each night is a special moment of pleading in which the servant presents all his needs to his Lord.

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) attached great importance to the witr prayer and said, "Do not abandon the witr" (Sunan Abi Dawud, Witr 1418). Recited in the last rak'ah of the witr prayer, this dua is the most sincere plea of the believer who takes refuge in his Lord at the end of the night.

Dua in English

O Allah, include me among Your servants who are guided. Grant me well-being together with the servants to whom You have granted well-being. Take me under Your protection and make what You have given me blessed. Guard me from the evils in Your decree. You decree, and no one can decree against You. Whomever You take as a friend is never humiliated. My exalted Lord, You are blessed and Your glory is great. Embrace me this night with Your mercy, O Lord. Amin.
