Rabbanā hab lanā min azwājinā wa dhurriyyātinā qurrata aʿyunin wa'jʿalnā li'l-muttaqīna imāmā.
Our Lord! Grant us spouses and offspring who will be the comfort of our eyes, and make us a model for those mindful of Allah! (al-Furqan 74)
Source: Sunan Abi Dawud 2160 (sahih (a verse of the Qur'an)).
Surah al-Furqan, verse 74. The dua for those who marry: (Sunan Abi Dawud, Nikah 36/2160; Sahih al-Bukhari, Nikah 67)
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to make this dua for those who married: "Bāraka'llāhu laka wa bāraka ʿalayka wa jamaʿa baynakumā fi'l-khayr," that is, "May Allah bless you, may He send blessing upon you, and may He join the two of you together in goodness" (Sunan Abi Dawud, Nikah 36/2160; Jami' at-Tirmidhi, Nikah 7).
In the Noble Qur'an, one of the characteristics of the ʿibad ar-Rahman, the servants of the Most Merciful, is that they pray for a righteous spouse and offspring. The expression "qurrata aʿyun" means comfort of the eyes; it describes spouses and children who are faithful, of good character and righteous.
For a blessed marriage, religiousness must be given weight in the choice of a spouse. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "A woman is married for four things: her wealth, her lineage, her beauty and her religion. Choose the religious one" (Sahih al-Bukhari, Nikah 15).
Our Lord! Grant us spouses and offspring who will be the comfort of our eyes. Make our marriage blessed and our home peaceful. Place love, mercy and respect between us. Grant that we be helpers to one another in our religion and in our worldly life. Send down blessing upon our home, and join us together upon what is good, O Lord. Amin.
