اَللّٰهُمَّ إِنَّكَ عَفُوٌّ كَرِيمٌ تُحِبُّ الْعَفْوَ فَاعْفُ عَنِّي
Allāhumma innaka ʿafuwwun karīmun tuḥibbu'l-ʿafwa faʿfu ʿannī.
O Allah! You are Most Forgiving, Most Generous, and You love to forgive. So forgive me too.
Source: Jami' at-Tirmidhi 3524 (hasan (good) hadith).
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would recite this dua for repentance and for seeking forgiveness. (Jami' at-Tirmidhi, Daʿawat 89/3524; Sunan Ibn Majah, Duʿaʾ 2/3850)
Repentance means feeling remorse for one's sins and turning back to Allah. Allah Almighty says: "O you who believe! Turn to Allah in sincere repentance" (at-Tahrim 8). "Say: O My servants who have transgressed against themselves! Do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed Allah forgives all sins. He is the Most Forgiving, the Most Merciful" (az-Zumar 53).
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "By Allah, I seek forgiveness and repent more than seventy times a day" (Sahih al-Bukhari, Daʿawat 3). This shows how sensitive the Prophet was, even though he was sinless.
Conditions for accepted repentance: to feel remorse for the sin, to abandon it at once, and to resolve never to commit it again. As for the rights owed to other people, one must settle the matter with the rightful owner and obtain their pardon.
O Allah! You are Most Forgiving, Most Generous, and You love to forgive. I am remorseful for all my sins and I have turned back to You. Accept my repentance sincerely. Protect me from returning to sin. Grant me to live as a servant with a pure heart, a fine tongue and righteous deeds. Make me one of Your servants whose repentance has been accepted, O Lord. Amin.
