أَسْتَغْفِرُ اللّٰهَ الْعَظِيمَ الَّذِي لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ الْحَيَّ الْقَيُّومَ وَأَتُوبُ إِلَيْهِ
Astaghfiru'llāha'l-ʿaẓīma'lladhī lā ilāha illā huwa'l-Ḥayya'l-Qayyūma wa atūbu ilayh.
I ask forgiveness of Allah the Most Great, besides whom there is no god, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of all, and I turn to Him in repentance.
Source: Sahih Muslim 2702 (sahih hadith).
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to recite this istighfar often. (Sahih Muslim, Dhikr 41/2702; Sunan Abi Dawud, Witr 26/1517)
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever says 'Astaghfiru'llāha'l-ʿaẓīma'lladhī lā ilāha illā huwa'l-Ḥayya'l-Qayyūma wa atūbu ilayh' is forgiven his sins, even if he has fled from battle" (Sunan Abi Dawud, Witr 26/1517; Jami' at-Tirmidhi, Daawat 38/3397).
In the Qur'an on the virtue of istighfar: "Ask forgiveness of your Lord, then turn to Him in repentance, so that He may let you live well until an appointed term and give to every possessor of merit the reward of his merit" (Hud 3).
Nuh (peace be upon him) told his people: "Ask forgiveness of your Lord, for He is Most Forgiving. He will send you abundant rain from the sky, increase your wealth and your children, and give you gardens and rivers" (Nuh 10-12).
Istighfar is the key to abundant provision, to blessing and to the forgiveness of sins. It should be recited three times after every salah (prayer) and at least 70-100 times a day.
I ask forgiveness of Allah the Most High. You are the Ever-Living, the Sustainer; there is no god but You. I repent of my sins, O Lord. Forgive all my sins, hidden and open, deliberate and unintentional. Protect me from my bad habits. Accept my repentance and make me one of Your purified servants, O Lord. Amin.
