رَبَّنَا اغْفِرْ لِي وَلِوَالِدَيَّ وَلِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ يَوْمَ يَقُومُ الْحِسَابُ
Rabbanā ghfir lī wa-li-wālidayya wa-li-l-muʾminīna yawma yaqūmu l-ḥisāb.
Our Lord! On the Day of Reckoning forgive me, my parents and the believers.
Source: Ibrahim 41 (a verse of the Noble Qur'an).
This is the dua for forgiveness that Ibrahim (peace be upon him) made for himself, for his parents and for all the believers. (Ibrahim 41)
This dua is the final part of Ibrahim's long dua in Surah Ibrahim (Ibrahim 35-41). After requests such as the safety of Mecca, protection from associating partners with Allah and constancy in salah (prayer), Ibrahim finally asked for forgiveness on the Day of Judgment.
The qualification "yawma yaqūmu l-ḥisāb" (when the Reckoning comes to pass) is important. On that Day, what people need most is the forgiveness of Allah. Ibrahim asked for this forgiveness for himself, for his parents and for all the believers. This is the finest expression of the consciousness of the ummah and of the brotherhood of believers.
That he mentioned his parents before himself, and after his parents all the believers, shows the order of priority in Islam: first one's own self, then one's parents, then all the believers. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "The pleasure of Allah lies in the pleasure of the parents" (Jami' at-Tirmidhi, Birr 3).
This dua is especially important for those whose parents have died. For the finest gift that can be given to deceased parents is to pray for them. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "When a person dies his deeds come to an end, except for three: ongoing charity, beneficial knowledge, and a righteous child who prays for him" (Sahih Muslim, Wasiyyah 14).
Our Lord! When the Day of Reckoning comes, forgive me, forgive my parents, forgive all the believers. On that dreadful Day, surround us with Your forgiveness. Have mercy on my parents and fill their graves with light. Forgive all our believing brothers and sisters too, O Lord. Amin.
