Rabbi innī nadhartu laka mā fī baṭnī muḥarraran fa-taqabbal minnī innaka anta s-Samīʿu l-ʿAlīm.
My Lord! I have vowed to You what is in my womb, dedicated (to Your service). Accept it from me. Indeed, You are the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.
Source: Al Imran 35 (a verse of the Noble Qur'an).
This is the dua the wife of Imran (Hannah) made as she dedicated her child to Allah. This dua was made before the birth of our mother Maryam.
When the wife of Imran (our mother Hannah) became pregnant, she dedicated the child in her womb to Allah. Saying, "My Lord! I have vowed to You what is in my womb," she intended that the child to be born would serve at Bayt al-Maqdis. The Noble Qur'an states, "When the wife of Imran said, 'My Lord! I have vowed to You what is in my womb, so accept it from me'" (Al Imran 35).
Allah accepted this dua, chose Maryam, and placed her under the care of Zakariyya. The Qur'an states, "So her Lord accepted her with a good acceptance, caused her to grow like a beautiful plant, and put Zakariyya in charge of her care" (Al Imran 37).
It is remarkable that our mother Hannah, while expecting a girl, vowed a male child to Allah, yet Allah gave a girl (Maryam) and made her better than males. This shows that Allah's decree may differ from a person's intention and that Allah knows what is best.
This dua is an example for every mother and father who wishes to dedicate their children to Allah and to raise a righteous generation.
My Lord! I dedicate to You the child You will grant me. Give me a child who serves You, who is raised with Your Qur'an and adorned with the character of Islam. Accept this plea of mine. You are the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing. Grant our children a good future, O Lord. Amin.
