Source: Al Imran 8 (a verse of the Noble Qur'an).

It is verse 8 of Surah Al Imran. It is the dua of those who are firmly grounded in knowledge (rasikhun fi'l-ilm).

Virtue
Virtue

This dua is the dua of the scholars and righteous believers who are referred to in Surah Al Imran by the description "those firmly grounded in knowledge" (Rasikhun fi'l-ilm). They pray, "Our Lord! Do not let our hearts deviate after You have guided us."

This dua shows that being upon guidance is not a guarantee, that hearts may turn at any moment, and that one must pray continually because of this. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, as one of the duas he recited most often, "Yā Muqallib al-qulūb, thabbit qalbī ʿalā dīnik" (O Turner of hearts! Make my heart firm upon Your religion) (Jami' at-Tirmidhi, Da'awat 89).

When our mother Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) asked, "O Messenger of Allah, what is the dua you recite most?" the Prophet mentioned this dua. For hearts are between two of the fingers of Allah, and He turns them as He wills (Sahih Muslim, Qadar 17). To remain upon guidance is a favour from Allah, and one must pray continually for this favour.

That it ends with the name "al-Wahhab" (the One who bestows abundantly) stresses that Allah's mercy is without limit and that He gives without asking anything in return.

Dua in English

Our Lord! Do not let our hearts deviate after You have guided us. Do not part us from the straight path. Grant us a special mercy from Your presence. Make our hearts firm upon faith. You are al-Wahhab, the One who gives freely, O Lord. Amin.
