The Dua of Dawud (peace be upon him) | Qur'an Duas

Arabic Text

رَبِّ اغْفِرْ لِي وَتُبْ عَلَيَّ إِنَّكَ أَنْتَ التَّوَّابُ الرَّحِيمُ

Transliteration

Rabbi'ghfir lī wa tub ʿalayya innaka anta't-Tawwābu'r-Raḥīm.

Meaning

My Lord! Forgive me and accept my repentance. Truly You are the One who accepts repentance again and again, the Most Merciful.

It is the dua of repentance of Dawud (peace be upon him) that occurs in the Qur'an. It is found in ayat 24-25 of Surah Sad.

Virtue

Dawud (peace be upon him) is one of the prophets sent to the Children of Israel. The Zabur was given to him. In the Qur'an it is said: "Indeed We gave knowledge to Dawud and Sulayman" (an-Naml 15). Dawud was both a prophet and a ruler. He is renowned for reciting the Zabur with a beautiful voice and for worshipping much.

Surah Sad relates the story of Dawud's trial. Two litigants who entered his prayer chamber brought a case before him. Dawud produced a solution, but then understood that this was a test and turned at once to repentance: "Thereupon Dawud repented, prostrating to his Lord" (Sad 24).

Allah Almighty said: "So We forgave him that. Indeed he has nearness to Us and a beautiful place of return" (Sad 25). Even for so small a lapse, Dawud hastened at once to repent. This shows the sensitivity of the prophets in their servitude to Allah.

This short but powerful dua is the finest example for everyone who wishes to repent. The phrase "Innaka anta't-Tawwābu'r-Raḥīm" (Truly You are the One who accepts repentance again and again, the Most Merciful) is an expression of faith and hope in the boundlessness of Allah's forgiveness.

My Lord! Forgive me and accept my repentance. As You forgave Dawud, forgive me too. Cleanse me of my sins and grant that I come before You with a pure heart. You are the One who accepts repentance again and again, the Most Merciful. Encompass me with Your mercy, O Lord. Amin.
