Arabic Text

An-Naml 19 — Dua of Gratitude:

Sad 35 — A Request for Dominion:

Source: An-Naml 19 | Sad 35 (verses of the Noble Qur'an).

These are the two well-known duas of Sulayman (peace be upon him) that appear in the Qur'an. He was given an unmatched dominion and miracles.

Virtue
Virtue

Sulayman (peace be upon him) was the son of Dawud. Allah gave him authority over people, jinn and animals. He knew the language of the birds, and the wind and the jinn worked under his command. The Qur'an states, "And We had certainly given knowledge to Dawud and Sulayman" (An-Naml 15).

The dua in An-Naml 19 is the dua Sulayman uttered, smiling, when he heard what the ant said. This dua contains three important requests: to give thanks for blessings, to do righteous deeds, and to be in the company of the righteous. That thanks are given also for the blessing granted to one's parents shows the importance Islam attaches to parents.

The dua in Sad 35 is Sulayman's request for a dominion without equal. Allah accepted this dua and gave him an unmatched kingdom. The phrase "such as will belong to no one after me" is a request for an exclusive dominion. Allah accepted this request, saying, "So We subjected the wind to him, blowing gently by his command wherever he directed; and the devils, every builder and diver; and others bound together in shackles" (Sad 36-38).
