Rabbanā lā tajʿalnā fitnatan li-l-qawmi ẓ-ẓālimīn. Wa-najjinā bi-raḥmatika mina l-qawmi l-kāfirīn.
Our Lord! Do not make us a trial (an object of testing) for the wrongdoing people. Save us, by Your mercy, from the disbelieving people.
Source: Yunus 85-86 (verses of the Noble Qur'an).
This is the dua that those of the people of Musa (peace be upon him) who believed made while they were crushed under the tyranny of Pharaoh. (Yunus 85-86)
The Noble Qur'an relates that those who believed in Musa said, against the oppression of Pharaoh and his circle, "Our Lord! Do not make us a trial for the wrongdoing people, and save us, by Your mercy, from the disbelieving people" (Yunus 85-86). The phrase "do not make us a trial" carries two meanings: first, that the wrongdoers may afflict the believers and turn them away from their religion; second, that the wrongdoers prevailing over the believers may deter other people from faith.
This dua is the finest example of believers living under oppression taking refuge in their Lord in the face of pressure and hardship. Those who believed relied not on the power of the wrongdoers but on the mercy of Allah. The qualification "bi-raḥmatika" (by Your mercy) stresses that deliverance can come only through the mercy of Allah.
This dua is extremely meaningful in our own day as well. Muslims living under oppression, the wronged, and believers exposed to every kind of pressure should take refuge in Allah by reciting this dua. This dua may also be recited in times of turmoil, in social crises and in periods when faith grows weak.
Our Lord! Do not make us an occasion of testing for the wrongdoers. Do not allow them to prevail over us. By Your mercy, save us from the evil of the disbelievers and from the hand of the oppressors. Make our oppressed brothers and sisters too among the servants who take refuge in You and attain Your help, O Lord. Amin.
