Rabbana Hab Lana min Azwajina

This verse stands among the qualities of the believers who are described at the end of Surah Al-Furqan as "Ibad ar-Rahman" (the servants of the Most Merciful). These servants are people who perform salah (prayer) at night, who take refuge in Allah, who are neither wasteful nor miserly, who associate no partner with Allah, who do not commit fornication, who do not bear false witness and who turn away from idle things. It is these believers, adorned with such beautiful qualities, who make this dua in their family life as well.

The expression "qurrata aʿyun" (comfort of the eyes) describes eyes brimming with joy and a heart finding peace and happiness. That spouses and children should be a comfort to the eyes is possible only through their possessing faith, good character and fine manners. A righteous spouse and righteous children are the greatest blessings in this world.

The part "Wa-jʿalnā li-l-muttaqīna imāmā" (Make us leaders for the people of taqwa) is a very high aim. Not merely to be one of those mindful of Allah, but to be a leader for them was asked for. This shows that Islam envisages an active rather than a passive way of life, and that the believer must take on a role of leadership in society.
