Source: al-Qasas 24 (an ayah of the Noble Qur'an).

This is the dua that Musa (peace be upon him) made in the shade of the tree to which he withdrew after helping people at the well, on the road from Egypt to Madyan. (al-Qasas 24)

Virtue
Virtue

Musa (peace be upon him) had fled from Egypt after unintentionally killing a Copt. On the road to Madyan he reached a well, hungry, thirsty and exhausted. There he saw shepherds watering their flocks and noticed two women waiting behind them. He helped them and watered their flock. Then he withdrew into the shade and said: "My Lord! I am in need of whatever good You may send down to me" (al-Qasas 24).

Allah the Exalted accepted this dua at once. Musa was invited to the home of Shu'ayb (peace be upon him), the father of one of those two women; he was given offspring, he worked for ten years, and he was given the mission of prophethood. He was fed when he was hungry, given a family when he was alone, and made a householder when he had been driven out.

This dua is known as the "dua of the needy." The word "faqir" means one who is in need, poor, possessing nothing. Musa cut all his worldly ties, left everything behind, and confessed that he was in need of every good that Allah would give. This is the finest expression of servanthood.

This dua may be read in times of hardship in provision, while looking for work, while waiting for marriage, and whenever we are in need of any good. The moment Musa made this dua, everything changed. To know that you are in need of the good Allah will give is true wealth.

Dua in English

My Lord! I am in need of whatever good You may send down to me. Open doors for me as You opened them for Musa in Madyan. Make my provision abundant and make my circumstances easy. Nothing suffices me except the good that You will give. I am poor, I am in need, I have come to You, O my Lord. Amin.
