Rabbana Atina fi'd-Dunya Hasanah

Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to make this dua most often: 'Rabbanā ātinā fi d-dunyā ḥasanatan wa-fi l-ākhirati ḥasanatan wa-qinā ʿadhāba n-nār'" (Sahih al-Bukhari, Da'awat 55; Sahih Muslim, Dhikr 26). This hadith shows that it is the dua the Prophet repeated most.

The Noble Qur'an divides people into two groups: those who want only this world, and those who want both this world and the Hereafter. Of the first group it is said, "Among the people there is he who says, 'Our Lord! Give us in this world'; he will have no share in the Hereafter" (Al-Baqarah 200), while the second group are those who make the dua in this verse.

The word "hasanah" (good) is broad in meaning. Good in this world is health, lawful sustenance, a good spouse, righteous children, beneficial knowledge and good character. Good in the Hereafter is Paradise, the pleasure of Allah and deliverance from the Fire. In a single dua, all the good of this world and of the Hereafter is asked for. This dua can be recited in salah (prayer) between the prostration and the closing salam, during tawaf between the Yemeni Corner and the Black Stone, and at any time.
