Rabbanā ṣrif ʿannā ʿadhāba jahannam. Inna ʿadhābahā kāna gharāmā. Innahā sāʾat mustaqarran wa-muqāmā.
Our Lord! Turn away from us the punishment of Hell. Indeed, its punishment is a lasting and grievous affliction. Indeed, it is an evil place to halt and an evil place to stay.
Source: Al-Furqan 65-66 (verses of the Noble Qur'an).
It is one of the duas of the servants of the Most Merciful (Ibad ar-Rahman). (Al-Furqan 65-66)
In Surah Al-Furqan, while listing the qualities of "the servants of the Most Merciful" (Ibad ar-Rahman), Allah the Exalted describes their state at the time of dua: "They are those who walk humbly upon the earth. When the ignorant address them, they say, 'Peace.' They are those who spend their nights for their Lord in prostration and standing (salah, prayer). They are those who say, 'Our Lord! Turn away from us the punishment of Hell'" (Al-Furqan 63-65).
The word "gharām" means continuous, unceasing, unbearable and burning. That the punishment of Hell is unending and never comes to a close is its most terrifying aspect. The believer, thinking of this punishment, asks his Lord to protect him from it.
The expression "sāʾat mustaqarran wa-muqāmā" (What an evil place to halt and to stay) stresses that Hell is a lasting abode and that everyone who does not wish to remain there must make this dua. In this world the believer must fear Hell and take refuge in Allah out of that fear.
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Perform two rak'ahs of salah in order to be protected from Hell" (Sahih al-Bukhari, Tahajjud 26). It is recommended to recite this dua often in the prayers, especially in prostration and in the night worship.
Our Lord! Turn away from us the punishment of Hell. How heavy is that punishment, how evil is that place. Protect us from the fire of Hell. Grant us Your Paradise and Your pleasure. Make us among the servants who fear Hell and who are drawn toward Paradise, O Lord. Amin.
