This is the dua that Ibrahim (peace be upon him) made for a child. It is ayah 100 of Surah as-Saffat.

After Ibrahim (peace be upon him) had left his people and abandoned the idols, he prayed: "My Lord! Grant me one from among the righteous" (as-Saffat 100). Allah the Exalted accepted this dua and gave him Isma'il, saying: "So We gave him the good news of a forbearing (gentle-natured) boy" (as-Saffat 101).

This dua is the finest example for every believer who wishes for a child. Ibrahim did not merely say "give me a child"; he said "grant me one from among the righteous." That is, he asked for a righteous child of good character who worships Allah. In Islam what matters is not the number of children but that the child be righteous.

Our Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When a person dies, his deeds come to an end except for three: an ongoing charity, beneficial knowledge, and a righteous child who prays for him" (Sahih Muslim, Wasiyyah 14). A righteous child continues to benefit his parents even after their death.

Ibrahim's dua is short but full of meaning. The phrase "mina aṣ-ṣāliḥīn" (from among the righteous) asks that the child be righteous — one who worships Allah, has good character, and is of benefit to others. This dua may be read both by those who wish for children and by parents praying for the children they already have.

Dua in English

My Lord! Grant me righteous children. Give me children who have faith and good character, who worship You and are of benefit to society. Grant me a good progeny as You granted it to Ibrahim. Raise my children as Muslims who submit to You, O my Lord. Amin.
