This is the dua Ibrahim (peace be upon him) and the believers with him spoke against their people. (Al-Mumtahanah 4)

Verse 4 of Surah Al-Mumtahanah in the Noble Qur'an relates how Ibrahim and the believers with him, having called their people to the truth and been rejected, separated from them and made this dua: "There is an excellent example for you in Ibrahim and those with him, when they said to their people, 'We disassociate ourselves from you and from whatever you worship besides Allah. We have put our trust in You, we have turned to You, and to You is the return'" (Al-Mumtahanah 4).

The dua contains three fundamental expressions: tawakkul (we have relied on You, we have made You our trustee), inabah (we have turned to You, we have repented) and masir (the return is to You, we shall come before You in the Hereafter). These three are the essence of servitude to Allah.

Tawakkul is to trust Allah completely and to take Him as one's trustee. Inabah is to turn away from sins and turn toward Allah. Masir is to know that all roads lead to Allah. These three are the fundamental principles that give meaning to a believer's life.

This dua can be recited in every difficulty, when one meets hostility, when one is cast out for speaking the truth, and at every moment of trial. That Ibrahim made this dua as he left his people is the finest example of a believer cutting his worldly ties and turning to Allah.

Dua in English

Our Lord! We have put our trust in You; You are our support. We have turned to You; we stand at the door of Your repentance. The return is to You; we shall come before You in the Hereafter. Make us among the servants who rely on You, who turn to You and who take You as their trustee. Gladden those who encourage us, O Lord. Amin.
