اَللّٰهُمَّ أَعِنِّي عَلَى ذِكْرِكَ وَشُكْرِكَ وَحُسْنِ عِبَادَتِكَ
Allāhumma aʿinnī ʿalā dhikrika wa shukrika wa ḥusni ʿibādatik.
O Allah! Help me to remember You, to thank You, and to worship You well.
Source: Sunan Abi Dawud 1522 (sahih (authentic) hadith).
Narrated by Mu'adh ibn Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) taught him this dua and said, "Never fail to recite this at the end of every salah (prayer)." (Sunan Abi Dawud, Witr 26/1522; Sunan an-Nasa'i, Sahw 59/3/53; Musnad Ahmad V/244)
Mu'adh ibn Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) relates: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) took my hand and said: 'O Mu'adh! By Allah, I love you. Let me give you a piece of advice: never neglect to recite this dua at the end of every prayer: Allahumma a'inni ala dhikrika wa shukrika wa husni ibadatik'" (Sunan Abi Dawud, Witr 26/1522; Sunan an-Nasa'i, Sahw 59).
When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) taught this dua to Mu'adh, he said, "By Allah, I love you." This underlines how important the dua is. He was teaching the most precious thing to the person he loved.
The words "never neglect to recite this at the end of every prayer" show that this dua calls for constancy. It should be recited in every prayer — not once, but in all five daily prayers.
Three requests: dhikr (remembering and calling Allah to mind), gratitude (giving thanks for blessings), and beautiful worship (servitude in the state of ihsan). These three are the essence of servanthood. A person can attain them only with Allah's help. That is why he said "help me" — we cannot do this on our own.
Note: This dua is a particular narration of dua number 106, "Allahumma A'inni Ala Dhikrike". It is presented here in a different setting, with the story of its being taught to Mu'adh.
O Allah! Help me to remember You. Let me not forget You; let me remember You at every moment. Help me to thank You; let me see Your blessings and never be ungrateful. Help me to worship You well; let me perform my worship with ihsan. Give me strength in these three, O Lord. Amin.
