Meaning

O Allah! I ask You for all good, that which is near at hand and that which is to come, what I know of it and what I do not know. I seek refuge in You from every evil, that which is near at hand and that which is to come, what I know of it and what I do not know. O Allah! I ask You for Paradise and for the words and deeds that bring one near to it. I seek refuge in You from Hell and from the words and deeds that bring one near to it. And I ask You to make every decree You decree for me a good one.

Narrated by Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) taught this comprehensive dua to our mother Aishah. (Sunan Ibn Majah, Du'a 4/3846; Musnad Ahmad VI/134; al-Suyuti, al-Jami' as-Saghir 5506)

Our mother Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) transmitted this comprehensive dua, saying, "The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) recommended this dua to me" (Sunan Ibn Majah, Du'a 4/3846).

This dua consists of three parts:

The first part (asking for every good, seeking protection from every evil): "Every good, near at hand or delayed, known or unknown" is asked for; protection is sought from "every evil, near at hand or delayed, known or unknown." This wording also covers the good and the evil that a person does not know.

The second part (Paradise and Hell): Paradise and every word and deed that brings one near to it are asked for. Protection is sought from Hell and from every word and deed that brings one near to it. Word and deed are mentioned together, for protection from the sins of both the tongue and the limbs.

The third part (contentment with the decree): The request "Make every decree You decree for me a good one" is the most beautiful expression of contentment with divine destiny. It asks that what pleases us and what does not please us may both be good.
