Meaning

O Allah! You are my Lord. There is no god but You. You created me, and I am Your servant. I keep to Your covenant and Your promise as much as I am able. I seek refuge in You from the evil of what I have done. I acknowledge the blessings You have bestowed upon me. I acknowledge my sin as well. Forgive me. Truly there is none who forgives sins but You.

Kaynak

Source: Sahih al-Bukhari 6306 (sahih (authentic) hadith).

Narrated by Shaddad ibn Aws (may Allah be pleased with him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Sayyid al-istighfar (the chief of the prayers for forgiveness) is this:..." (Sahih al-Bukhari, Da'awat 2/6306; Jami' at-Tirmidhi, Da'awat 15/3393)

Shaddad ibn Aws (may Allah be pleased with him) relates: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Sayyid al-istighfar is this: Allahumma anta Rabbi...' Whoever recites it during the day with firm conviction and dies that day will be among the people of Paradise. And whoever recites it during the night with firm conviction and dies that night will be among the people of Paradise" (Sahih al-Bukhari, Da'awat 2/6306).

The word "sayyid" means master, chief, the most excellent. This dua was regarded as the most meritorious of the prayers for forgiveness, because it rests on seven fundamental principles: tawhid (there is no god but You), lordship (You are my Lord), creation (You created me), servanthood (I am Your servant), faithfulness to the covenant (I keep to Your covenant), seeking refuge (I seek refuge in You from evils), and the request for forgiveness (forgive me).

The words "abu'u laka bi-ni'matika" (I acknowledge Your blessing) and "abu'u bi-dhanbi" (I acknowledge my sin) teach us to attribute the blessing to Allah and the sin to ourselves. This balance is the essence of servanthood. This is a dua of great merit, recommended for morning and evening, after every prayer, and especially in the last hours before dawn.
