The Allahummakfini Bi-Halalika Dua

Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) relates: "A slave who had a contract for his freedom (mukatab) came to me and said, 'I cannot find the money I must pay my master.' I taught him this dua which the Messenger of Allah had taught: 'Allahummakfini bi-halalika an haramika wa aghnini bi-fadlika amman siwak.' Afterwards that slave said: 'Allah accepted this dua; I paid my debt and became free'" (Jami' at-Tirmidhi, Da'awat 87/3563).

This short but very effective dua contains two important requests: lawful provision, and having no need of anyone besides Allah. The phrase "Bi-halalika an haramika" (suffice me with what is lawful to You, away from what is unlawful) shows that lawful provision is always better and more blessed than the unlawful. If a person is content with lawful provision, he does not turn to the unlawful.

The part "Wa aghnini bi-fadlika amman siwak" (enrich me with Your bounty so that I need no one besides You) teaches that true wealth is to be in need of Allah and to be independent of His servants. The provision that is in the hands of people also comes from Allah. For that reason, the most correct course is to turn directly to Allah and to ask of Him.

The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Whoever is in need of anyone besides Allah will never be rich." This dua is one of the shortest and most effective duas for provision, one that every Muslim should memorise and read constantly.
