Allāhumma qanniʿnī bimā razaqtanī wa bārik lī fīhi wakhluf ʿalayya kulla ghāʾibatin lī bi-khayr.
O Allah! Grant me contentment with the provision You have given me. Put blessing in it for me. And give me something better in place of everything I have lost.
Source: Jami' at-Tirmidhi 3563 (hasan [good] hadith).
Narrated by Ali (may Allah be pleased with him). (Jami' at-Tirmidhi, Da'awat 87/3563; al-Mustadrak (al-Hakim) I/541)
This dua contains three important requests:
Qanni'ni bima razaqtani (Make me content with the provision You have given): Contentment is to be satisfied with the provision one has and not to covet more. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Richness is not having many possessions; richness is richness of the heart" (Sahih al-Bukhari, Riqaq 15). Being content protects a person from greed, envy and the unlawful. To be satisfied with what Allah has given is true servanthood.
Barik li fihi (Put blessing in it for me): Blessing is when the little becomes much and what was not enough becomes enough. Blessing comes from Allah. There is blessing in lawful provision; there is no blessing in the unlawful. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Begin your meal with the name of Allah so that Allah may give blessing."
Wakhluf alayya kulla gha'ibatin bi-khayr (Give me something better in place of what I have lost): In this life a person loses many things — health, wealth, loved ones, opportunities. This request is to ask Allah for something better in place of everything that has been lost. Allah leaves no loss without recompense; He gives something better.
It is very beneficial to read this dua especially in times of hardship in provision, in the loss of wealth, in want, and whenever contentment is sought.
O Allah! Grant me contentment with the provision You have given. Protect me from greed and covetousness. Put blessing in my provision; make it abundant even if it is little. Give me something better in place of everything I have lost. Make me one of Your contented, blessed and grateful servants, O my Lord. Amin.
