Our mother Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) relates: "In the salah (prayer) the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to seek refuge in Allah from these things: 'Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min fitnati'n-nar...'" (Sahih al-Bukhari, Adhan 149/832; Sahih Muslim, Masajid 129/589).

This dua asks for protection from seven great trials and punishments:

The trial of Hell: Protection from the sins that lead to the punishment of Hell and from the trial of Satan. The punishment of Hell: Protection from Hell itself.

The trial of the grave: Protection from the trial of being confounded before the questions of the angels in the grave and being unable to answer. The punishment of the grave: Protection from the punishment that is suffered in the grave.

The trial of wealth: Protection from the trial of property and wealth driving a person to transgression, to forgetting Allah, to arrogance and to miserliness. The trial of poverty: Protection from the trial of poverty driving a person to the unlawful, to theft and to disbelief.

The trial of the Dajjal: Protection from the misguidance and the trials of the Dajjal, who is among the major signs of the Last Day.

The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to seek refuge from these seven trials in his prayers. It is recommended to read this dua in every salah, especially in the final sitting.
