Allāhumma fa-ayyumā muʾminin sababtuhu fa-jʿal dhālika lahu qurbatan ilayka yawma l-qiyāmah.
O my Lord! Whichever believer I have spoken to with a word that grieved him and weighed heavily on his heart, on the Day of Resurrection make that word a means of nearness to You for him; that is, bring him as near to You as he was distressed by it.
Source: Sahih Muslim 2708 (sahih (authentic) hadith).
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) made this dua. (Sahih al-Bukhari, Daawat 34; Sahih Muslim, Birr 90/2601)
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed: "O Allah! Whichever believer I have spoken to with a word that grieved him, on the Day of Resurrection make that word a means of nearness to You for him" (Sahih al-Bukhari, Daawat 34).
This dua shows how sensitive a heart the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had. He never wished to hurt any believer; he repented even for words he might have said without being aware of it, and he asked Allah to turn the consequence of such a word to that believer's benefit.
If the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), although he was sinless — that is, protected from committing sin — prayed with such sensitivity, then we, as people who do commit sins, must be far more careful, and we must recite this dua for the believers whom we have hurt without being aware of it.
This dua should be recited whenever we may have hurt others without being aware of it, whenever we may have violated the rights owed to another person, and generally in order to be careful in our dealings with people.
O Allah! If I have grieved any believer without being aware of it, or broken his heart, turn that word of mine to his benefit. Make it a means of nearness to You on the Day of Resurrection. Protect me from hurting Your servants. Forgive me the rights I owe to others, O Lord. Amin.
