A'udhu Bi Kalimatillahi't-Tammat — The Dua of Seeking Refuge in the Words of Allah

The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said about this dua: "Whoever stops at a place and says, 'I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of what He has created,' nothing will harm him until he leaves that place" (Sahih Muslim, Salam 54/2708; Sahih al-Bukhari, Da'awat 12/6372).

"Kalimatullahi't-tammat" (the perfect words of Allah) is the Noble Qur'an. Allah's words are complete and perfect, free from any deficiency. Whoever takes refuge in these words has entered under the protection of the Qur'an.

Reading this dua was especially recommended in these situations: when one comes to a new place, when one enters the house, when one is going to sleep, and when one sets out on a journey. For the glad tiding has been given that "whoever stops at a place and reads this dua, nothing there can harm him."

This is one of the shortest and most effective duas of protection in the sunnah. Despite its brevity it is extremely comprehensive: the phrase "ma khalaq" (whatever He has created) covers the evil of every kind of creature — seen and unseen, known and unknown, human, animal, of the jinn and of nature. It is very beneficial to read this dua at least three times a day (in the morning, in the evening and on going to bed).
