اَللّٰهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْبَرَصِ وَالْجُنُونِ وَالْجُذَامِ وَمِنْ سَيِّئِ الْأَسْقَامِ
Allāhumma innī aʿūdhu bika mina l-baraṣi wa-l-junūni wa-l-judhāmi wa min sayyiʾi l-asqām.
O Allah! I seek refuge in You from baras (vitiligo), from insanity, from leprosy, and from evil diseases.
Source: Sunan Abi Dawud 1554 (sahih (authentic) hadith).
Narrated by Anas (may Allah be pleased with him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to recite this dua. (Sunan Abi Dawud, Witr 32/1554; Sunan an-Nasa'i, Istiadha 21; Musnad Ahmad III/192)
Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) relates: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to pray: 'Allāhumma innī aʿūdhu bika mina l-baraṣi wa-l-junūni wa-l-judhāmi wa min sayyiʾi l-asqām'" (Sunan Abi Dawud, Witr 32/1554).
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) taught us to seek refuge with Allah from four diseases:
Baraṣ (vitiligo): A disease in which the colour of the skin is disrupted and turns white. It is a disease that keeps a person away from social life and causes him to be excluded.
Junūn (insanity): Losing one's mind, becoming mad. The intellect is one of Allah's greatest blessings. A person whose mind is gone cannot even worship.
Judhām (leprosy): A disease in which the limbs decay and fall away. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Flee from the leper as you would flee from a lion" (Sahih al-Bukhari, Tibb 19).
Sayyiʾ al-asqām (evil diseases): All other severe, chronic, and evil illnesses. This general expression also covers grave diseases such as cancer and paralysis.
Reciting this dua morning and evening is very effective for protection from disease. It is a sunnah to ask Allah for health and well-being.
O Allah! I seek refuge in You from vitiligo, from insanity, from leprosy, and from every kind of evil disease. Grant me health and well-being. Protect my body, my mind, and my soul from illness. Grant me to serve You in good health, O Lord. Amin.
