اَللّٰهُمَّ اجْعَلْ لَنَا دِينَنَا حِصْنًا وَدُنْيَانَا مَطِيَّةً وَبِاللّٰهِ نَصُولُ وَبِاللّٰهِ نَجُولُ وَبِاللّٰهِ نُقَاتِلُ
Allāhumma jʿal lanā dīnanā ḥiṣnan wa dunyānā maṭiyyatan wa bi-Llāhi naṣūlu wa bi-Llāhi najūlu wa bi-Llāhi nuqātil.
O Allah! Make our religion a fortress (a protection) for us. Make our world a mount (a means) for us. By Allah we advance, by Allah we move about, and by Allah we fight.

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to recite this dua. (Jami' at-Tirmidhi, Daawat 76/3502)
This dua is an important prophetic dua that expresses in a beautiful way the balance between religion and the world.
Dīnanā ḥiṣnan (Religion as a fortress): Religion is a person's shelter. A fortress (hisn) means a rampart that protects against the enemy. If a person's religion is sound, he is protected from trials and from sins. Whoever loses his religion is left defenceless, like one who has lost his fortress.
Dunyānā maṭiyyatan (world as a mount): Matiyyah means a riding animal. The world should be a mount for travelling to the Hereafter; it should not be the goal. A person should ride the world; the world should not ride the person. The world should carry us; we should not carry the world on our backs. This means seeing the world as the field of the Hereafter.
Bi-Llāhi naṣūlu wa bi-Llāhi najūlu wa bi-Llāhi nuqātil (By Allah we advance, we move about, we fight): Every deed is done in the name of Allah. Might and strength come from Allah. The phrase "Lā ḥawla wa lā quwwata illā billāh" expresses that power and strength are only with Allah.
This dua is especially valuable for those who wish to keep the balance between the world and religion, to be protected from the trials of the world, and to live in reliance upon Allah.
O Allah! Make our religion a fortress and a shelter for us. Make our world a mount that carries us to the Hereafter, a means and not an end. We act in the name of Allah, and by Allah we are strengthened. Preserve us through our religion, and put the world in our hands, not in our hearts, O Lord. Amin.
