Allāhumma innī asʾaluka raḥmatan min ʿindika tahdī bihā qalbī wa tajmaʿu bihā shamlī wa talummu bihā shaʿthī wa taruddu bihā ghāʾibī wa tarfaʿu bihā shāhidī wa tuzakkī bihā ʿamalī wa tulhimunī bihā rushdī wa taruddu bihā ulfatī wa taʿṣimunī bihā min kulli sūʾ.
O Allah! I ask You for such a mercy from Yourself that by it You guide my heart, gather what is scattered in me, set right what is disordered in me, restore what I have lost, raise my rank, purify my deeds, inspire me with the right way, reunite me with those I love, and protect me from every evil.
Source: Sunan Ibn Majah 3836 (hasan [good] hadith).
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to recite this comprehensive dua. (Sunan Ibn Majah, Du'a 2/3836; Jami' at-Tirmidhi, Da'awat 6/3419)
This dua is a comprehensive supplication containing nine great requests sought through the mercy of Allah. The phrase "Rahmatan min indika" (a mercy from Yourself) emphasises that this mercy does not come by any worldly cause but is a special mercy coming directly from Allah.
These nine requests are: the guidance of the heart, the gathering of what is scattered, the setting right of what is disordered, the return of what has been lost, the raising of one's rank, the purification of deeds, inspiration with the right way, reunion with loved ones, and protection from evils. Each one is linked with "biha" (by it), emphasising that a single mercy will meet all of these needs.
Through this dua all the shortcomings in a person's life are presented to Allah. It may be read in every kind of hardship, whenever one feels scattered, and whenever one wishes to bring order to one's life.
O Allah! I ask You for such a mercy from Yourself: give guidance to my heart, gather what is scattered in me, set right what is disordered in me. Restore what I have lost, raise my rank. Purify my deeds, inspire me with the right way. Reunite me with those I love and protect me from every evil, O my Lord. Amin.
