Anas ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to recite this dua often." (Sahih al-Bukhari, Daawat 36) This noble hadith teaches us the practice of the Prophet of taking refuge with Allah from the spiritual and material difficulties that may be met with in daily life. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had made it his custom to recite this dua after the morning and evening prayers.

This comprehensive dua contains eight fundamental problems that affect a person's spiritual and social life negatively. Hamm (worry about the future) and hazan (grief over the past) are diseases of the heart. Ajz and kasal are afflictions of the body, jubn and bukhl of the lower self, and debt and the tyranny of men are afflictions of social life. That it gathers all these acts of seeking refuge into a single dua offers the believer a comprehensive shield of protection.

Imam an-Nawawi (may Allah be pleased with him) says the following about the merit of this dua: "This dua is among the most comprehensive (jami) duas for the protection of the servant from difficulties both of this world and of the next. For a person is occupied either with grief over the past or with worry about the future; this dua teaches him to seek refuge with Allah from both of them."

Dua in English

O my Lord, take away from me the anxieties that fall into my heart and the sorrows that turn in my mind. Give me strength in the tasks I shrink from, thinking I cannot do them, and grant me the resolve to struggle against my laziness. Purify me of the blameworthy traits of the lower self such as cowardice and miserliness. Protect me from being crushed under the weight of debt and from being left under the pressure and oppression of people. I have no door of refuge but You, and no strength to lean upon but Yours, O Most Merciful of the merciful.
