Dua for Boarding a Ship

Bu duayı Türkçe oku

Transliteration

Bi-smi llāhi majrāhā wa-mursāhā, inna rabbī la-ghafūrun raḥīm.

Wa-mā qadarū llāha ḥaqqa qadrih. Wa-l-arḍu jamīʿan qabḍatuhū yawma l-qiyāmah. Wa-s-samāwātu maṭwiyyātun bi-yamīnih. Subḥānahū wa-taʿālā ʿammā yushrikūn.

Meaning

Its sailing and its anchoring are in the name of Allah. Truly my Lord is Forgiving, Merciful. (Hud 41)

They did not appraise Allah as He truly deserves. Yet on the Day of Judgement the whole earth is in His grasp, and the heavens are folded up in His mighty hand. He is far above and exalted beyond what they associate with Him. (az-Zumar 67)

Kaynak

Source: Surah Hud 41 (an ayah of the Noble Qur'an).

This dua is the ayah that Nuh (peace be upon him) recited as he boarded the ark. The second ayah is ayah 67 of Surah az-Zumar. (Mahmud Sami Ramazanoğlu, Dualar ve Zikirler, Erkam Yayınları)

Virtue
Virtue

This dua is among the words that Nuh (peace be upon him) spoke in the Noble Qur'an as he boarded the ark before the flood. The ayah "Bi-smi llāhi majrāhā wa-mursāhā" expresses Nuh's submission to Allah. The sailing of the ship and its stopping are both in the name of Allah. This ayah is the strongest dua of refuge for those who set out on a sea journey.

If these ayat are recited when boarding a ship, one is safe from sinking by the permission of Allah. The second ayah, az-Zumar 67, emphasises Allah's infinite power. It reminds us that the heavens and the earth are in the hand of His might. When we consider how helpless a person can be at sea even aboard a great ship, the necessity of taking refuge in Allah's power is better understood.

The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would also recite ayat 13-14 of Surah az-Zukhruf and these duas when mounting any kind of riding animal or vehicle. Since travel by sea was regarded as more dangerous than travel by land, the importance of these duas is greater still.

Dua in English

O Allah, in Your name I board this vessel of the sea. Its sailing and its stopping are by Your power. You are the Owner of the seas and the waves. Protect us from every danger of the sea. Protect us as You protected Nuh (peace be upon him). Grant us to set out in safety and to return in safety, O Lord. Amin.
