بِسْمِ اللّٰهِ تَوَكَّلْتُ عَلَى اللّٰهِ وَلَا حَوْلَ وَلَا قُوَّةَ إِلَّا بِاللّٰهِ
اَللّٰهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ أَنْ أَضِلَّ أَوْ أُضَلَّ أَوْ أَزِلَّ أَوْ أُزَلَّ أَوْ أَظْلِمَ أَوْ أُظْلَمَ أَوْ أَجْهَلَ أَوْ يُجْهَلَ عَلَيَّ
Bi-smi llāhi tawakkaltu ʿalā llāhi wa-lā ḥawla wa-lā quwwata illā bi-llāh.
Additional Text: Allāhumma innī aʿūdhu bika an aḍilla aw uḍalla, aw azilla aw uzalla, aw aẓlima aw uẓlama, aw ajhala aw yujhala ʿalayya.
In the name of Allah; I have placed my trust in Allah. There is no power and no strength except with Allah.
Additional Text: O Allah, I seek refuge with You from going astray or being led astray, from slipping or being made to slip, from wronging or being wronged, from behaving ignorantly or having others behave ignorantly towards me.

Narrated by Anas (may Allah be pleased with him). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever says on leaving his house, 'Bi-smi llāhi tawakkaltu ʿalā llāhi wa-lā ḥawla wa-lā quwwata illā bi-llāh', it is said to him: 'May your way be clear, you are protected, you have been guided,' and Satan withdraws from him." (Sunan Abi Dawud, Adab 102-103; Jami' at-Tirmidhi, Da'awat 34)
Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) relates: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Whoever, on leaving his house, says Bismillah and declares that he has placed his trust in Allah, Satan says of him: There is nothing I can do to this person, for he has been guided, protected and made sufficient — and he withdraws from him'" (Sunan Abi Dawud, Adab 103). This hadith shows how powerful a protection this short dua provides.
To leave the house is to expose oneself to the dangers outside. For this moment the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) also recommended a broader dua of refuge: "O Allah, I seek refuge with You from going astray or being led astray, from erring or being made to err, from wronging or being wronged, from behaving ignorantly or having others behave ignorantly towards me, from asking for something that is not my right, and from being asked for something that is not in my power" (Sunan Abi Dawud, Adab 102-103; Ali al-Muttaqi, VII, 144).
The phrase "Lā ḥawla wa-lā quwwata illā bi-llāh" has been described as one of the treasures of Paradise (Sahih al-Bukhari, Da'awat 50). According to a narration from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), every meaningful word or deed that is not begun by mentioning Allah Most High is without blessing (Musnad Ahmad, II, 360). For this reason a believer should always leave the house with the Basmalah.
O Allah, I leave my house in Your name, and I place my trust in You. I seek refuge with You from going astray, from being led astray, from erring, from wronging and from being wronged. Protect me on my way and enable me to succeed in good works. I know that my strength rests upon Your power, and that You create both good and harm. Grant that my return too be with goodness, O Lord. Amin.
