سُبْحَانَ الَّذِي يُسَبِّحُ الرَّعْدُ بِحَمْدِهِ وَالْمَلَائِكَةُ مِنْ خِيفَتِهِ
When lightning flashes:
اَللّٰهُمَّ لَا تَقْتُلْنَا بِغَضَبِكَ وَلَا تُهْلِكْنَا بِعَذَابِكَ وَعَافِنَا قَبْلَ ذَلِكَ
Subḥāna alladhī yusabbiḥu ar-raʿdu bi-ḥamdihi wa-l-malāʾikatu min khīfatih.
When lightning flashes: Allāhumma lā taqtulnā bi-ghaḍabika wa-lā tuhliknā bi-ʿadhābika wa-ʿāfinā qabla dhālik.
I declare the glory of Allah, whom the thunder glorifies with praise and whom the angels glorify out of awe (fear) of Him.
When lightning flashes: O Allah! Do not slay us with Your wrath, do not destroy us with Your punishment, and grant us well-being before that.

Narrated by Abdullah ibn az-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him). When he heard thunder he would stop speaking and recite this dua. This dua is inspired by verse 13 of Surah ar-Ra'd in the Noble Qur'an. (Imam Malik, Muwatta Malik, Shi'r 3/39; Jami' at-Tirmidhi, Ibn as-Sunni)
When Abdullah ibn az-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him) heard thunder he would stop speaking and say, "Subḥāna alladhī yusabbiḥu ar-raʿdu bi-ḥamdih…" (Muwatta Malik, Shi'r 3/39). This dua is inspired by the ayah in the Noble Qur'an: "The thunder glorifies Allah with praise. The angels too glorify Him out of awe of Him" (ar-Ra'd 13).
When it thundered, our Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave this advice: "When you hear thunder, remember Allah, for it does no harm to the one who remembers Him" (al-Tabarani). In addition, when he heard lightning and thunder the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would pray: "O my Lord! Do not slay us with Your wrath, do not destroy us with Your punishment, and grant us well-being before that" (Jami' at-Tirmidhi).
Thunder is one of the clearest manifestations of Allah's power. Before this immense natural event, the most fitting conduct for a servant is to tremble, to glorify Allah and to acknowledge His majesty. The believer too should spend with tasbih this moment in which even the angels glorify Him out of fear.
O Allah, the thunder glorifies You with praise and the angels stand in awe of Your majesty. I too declare Your perfection before this power of Yours. Do not slay us with Your wrath, do not destroy us with Your punishment. Grant us well-being before that. Make us among Your servants who contemplate Your power in the events of nature, O Lord. Amin.
