آيِبُونَ تَائِبُونَ عَابِدُونَ لِرَبِّنَا حَامِدُونَ
Āyibūna tāʾibūna ʿābidūna li-Rabbinā ḥāmidūn.
We are those who return, who repent, who worship, and who praise our Lord.

Narrated by Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was returning from a military expedition, or from hajj or umrah, and climbed to high ground, he would say the takbir three times and recite this dua. (Sahih al-Bukhari, Umrah 12, Jihad 132; Sahih Muslim, Hajj 428)
Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) relates: "When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was returning from a military expedition, hajj or umrah and climbed the hills, he would say 'Allāhu akbar' three times and then say: 'Lā ilāha illā llāhu waḥdahu lā sharīka lah, lahu l-mulku wa-lahu l-ḥamdu wa-huwa ʿalā kulli shayʾin qadīr. Āyibūna tāʾibūna ʿābidūna li-Rabbinā ḥāmidūn. Ṣadaqa llāhu waʿdahu wa-naṣara ʿabdahu wa-hazama l-aḥzāba waḥdah'" (Sahih al-Bukhari, Umrah 12). This dua expresses thanks for the blessing of a safe return and declares that Allah's promise has been fulfilled.
Returning from a journey is a moment both of thanksgiving and of repentance. The expression "tāʾibūna" (we are those who repent) refers to seeking forgiveness for shortcomings that may have occurred during the journey, while the expression "ʿābidūna" (we are those who worship) shows that the journey itself is an act of worship.
When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) returned from a journey, he would first go to the mosque and pray two rak'ahs of salah (prayer) (Sahih al-Bukhari, Umrah 15). This sunnah shows that the first thing done on returning should be to give thanks to Allah.
O Allah, I have returned safe and sound from my journey, and I praise You. I return repenting and worshipping. You are the One who brought me back and who brought my journey to safety. You fulfilled Your promise and helped Your servant. Make this return a blessed one, and bless the place to which I have come. Bring every journey of mine to an end with worship of You and thanks to You, O Lord. Amin.
