أَعُوذُ بِاللّٰهِ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ الرَّجِيمِ
(One blows three times to the left as if spitting)
Aʿūdhu bi-Llāhi mina ash-shayṭāni ar-rajīm. (One blows lightly to the left three times)
I take refuge in Allah from Satan, the accursed.

Narrated by Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him). Our Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "A good dream is from Allah, a bad dream is from Satan. When one of you sees a dream he dislikes, let him spit three times to his left, take refuge in Allah from Satan, change the side on which he is lying, and not tell that dream to anyone. In that case that dream will not harm him." (Sahih al-Bukhari, Ta'bir 3-4; Sahih Muslim, Ru'ya 3-5)
Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) relates: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'A good dream is from Allah, a bad dream is from Satan. If one of you sees a dream he dislikes, let him spit three times to his left and take refuge in Allah from the evil of Satan. That dream will not harm him'" (Sahih al-Bukhari, Ta'bir 3; Sahih Muslim, Ru'ya 3). This hadith teaches that a bad dream is a deception of Satan and shows the way to be protected from it.
Our Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) recommended four things to the person who sees a bad dream: to blow three times to the left as if spitting, to say "A'udhu bi-Llahi mina ash-shaytani ar-rajim," to change the side on which one is lying, and not to tell the dream to anyone. When these four steps are applied, a bad dream does no harm.
A good dream, on the other hand, is glad tidings from Allah. Our Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The good dream of a believer is one part of the forty-six parts of prophethood" (Sahih al-Bukhari, Ta'bir 2; Sahih Muslim, Ru'ya 6). A person who sees a good dream should tell it only to those he loves.
O Allah, I take refuge in You from Satan, the accursed. Protect me from the evil of the bad dream I have seen. Make my sleep peaceful and guard me from the whisperings of Satan. Make my nights full of light, my dreams beautiful and my awakenings good. Show me beautiful dreams and gladden me with Your glad tidings, O Lord. Amin.
