Meaning

Its moving and its resting are in the name of Allah. My Lord forgives and shows mercy. Glory be to the One who placed this at our service; we could never have managed it by our own strength. And truly, to our Lord we shall return.

Kaynak

Source: Jami' at-Tirmidhi 3446 (sahih hadith).

Narrated by Ali (may Allah be pleased with him). This dua is taken from ayat 13-14 of Surah az-Zukhruf, and its first sentence from ayah 41 of Surah Hud. (Sunan Abi Dawud, Jihad 72-74; Jami' at-Tirmidhi, Da'awat 83-84)

Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) relates: "When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) mounted his riding animal he would say the takbir three times, recite the ayah of Surah az-Zukhruf, and then make the dua for travel" (Jami' at-Tirmidhi, Da'awat 83). The sentence "Bi-smi llāhi majrāhā wa-mursāhā" is taken from ayah 41 of Surah Hud. It is the dua that Nuh (peace be upon him) recited as he boarded the ark.

In the source hadith, Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) relates: "When he put his foot in the stirrup of the animal he said 'Bismillah.' When he had settled upon it he recited the ayah of az-Zukhruf. Then he said 'Alhamdulillah' three times and 'Allahu akbar' three times. After that he said, 'Subḥānaka innī ẓalamtu nafsī fa-ghfir lī' (Glory be to You; I have wronged myself, so forgive me), and he laughed. When he was asked why, he said: 'The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did the same and laughed. When I asked him why he had laughed, he said: Your Lord Most High is pleased with His servant who asks for forgiveness knowing that no one but He forgives sins'" (Sunan Abi Dawud, Jihad 74; Jami' at-Tirmidhi, Da'awat 46).

This narration shows that when boarding a vehicle both gratitude and the seeking of forgiveness should be offered together. The phrase "To our Lord we shall return" emphasises that every journey is in reality a reflection of the journey to the hereafter.

Dua in English

O Allah, the moving and the resting of this vehicle are in Your name. Glory be to the One who placed it at my service. I could not have managed this by my own strength; I use it by Your favour. Make my journey a good one. Protect me from accident and calamity. Grant me safety in going out and in returning. My true return is to You, O Lord. Amin.
