غُفْرَانَكَ ﴿﴾ اَلْحَمْدُ لِلّٰهِ الَّذِي أَذْهَبَ عَنِّي الْأَذَى وَعَافَانِي
Ghufrānak. Al-ḥamdu lillāhi'lladhī adhhaba ʿannī al-adhā wa-ʿāfānī.
(My Lord) I ask for Your forgiveness. All praise is due to Allah, who removed the discomfort from me and granted me well-being.
Source: Sunan Abi Dawud 30 (sahih hadith).
Narrated by Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her). When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came out of the toilet, he would say "Ghufrānak." (Sunan Abi Dawud, Taharah 17; Jami' at-Tirmidhi, Taharah 5; Sunan Ibn Majah, Taharah 10)
Our mother Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) relates: "When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came out of the toilet, he would say 'Ghufrānak' (I ask for Your forgiveness)" (Sunan Abi Dawud, Taharah 17; Jami' at-Tirmidhi, Taharah 5). This short but deeply meaningful dua shows that the Prophet turned to Allah in every state.
The scholars have explained the wisdom of saying "Ghufrānak" when leaving the toilet as follows: while in the toilet the servant has been unable to make remembrance of Allah; therefore, on coming out, he says "I ask for Your forgiveness," seeking pardon for having remained far from dhikr during that period of time. Another interpretation is that it is a request that the heart be purified of sins just as the body has been cleansed of harmful matter.
The part "All praise is due to Allah, who removed the discomfort" expresses thanks for the blessing of being relieved of bodily distress. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) never neglected to praise Allah even for the smallest comfort or blessing.
My Lord, I ask for Your forgiveness. I beseech You to pardon me for not having been able to remember You while in the toilet. You are the One who removes discomfort from my body and grants me well-being. Grant me the ability to give thanks for the blessing of health You have given me. Make it easy for me to remember You in every state, O Lord. Amin.
