Allāhumma innā nasʾaluka fī safarinā hādhā l-birra wa-t-taqwā wa-mina l-ʿamali mā tarḍā. Allāhumma hawwin ʿalaynā safaranā hādhā wa-ṭwi ʿannā buʿdah. Allāhumma anta ṣ-ṣāḥibu fī s-safari wa-l-khalīfatu fī l-ahl. Allāhumma innī aʿūdhu bika min waʿthāʾi s-safari wa-kaʾābati l-manẓari wa-sūʾi l-munqalabi fī l-māli wa-l-ahl.
O Allah! On this journey of ours we ask You for righteousness, taqwa (mindfulness of Allah), and deeds with which You are pleased. O Allah! Make this journey of ours easy for us and bring its distance near. O Allah! You are the companion on the journey and the guardian over the family left behind. O Allah! I seek refuge in You from the hardship of travel, from distressing sights, and from seeing an evil state in my property and family.
Source: Sahih Muslim, Hajj 425 (sahih hadith).
Narrated by Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) set out on a journey, he would mount his riding animal, say the takbir three times, and then recite this dua. (Sahih Muslim, Hajj 425; Sunan Abi Dawud, Jihad 72-73; Jami' at-Tirmidhi, Da'awat 84)
Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) relates: "When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was about to set out on a journey, he would mount his camel, say the takbir three times, recite the ayat of Surah az-Zukhruf, and then make this dua" (Sahih Muslim, Hajj 425). This dua is a perfect intimate supplication encompassing every dimension of travel.
The dua contains four main requests: that the journey be a means to good deeds, that the road be made easy, that Allah be the companion on the journey and the protector of the family, and protection from the hardships of travel. Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) imitated this dua of the Prophet exactly, and our Master met this devotion of his with a smile. He said: "Your Exalted Lord is pleased with the servant who asks forgiveness knowing that there is no one but Him to forgive sins" (Sunan Abi Dawud, Jihad 74; Jami' at-Tirmidhi, Da'awat 46).
The phrase "You are the companion on the journey and the guardian over the family" asks in a single sentence both that the loneliness of being far from home be relieved and that the family left behind be protected. The dua "bring its distance near" is a spiritual support that lightens the hardship of travel.
O Allah, make this journey of ours a blessed one. Make our road easy and bring its distance near. Be a companion to us on the way, and take care of the family we have left behind. Preserve us from the weariness of travel, from evil outcomes, and from distressing news. Grant us also a safe return, with goodness and blessing, O Lord. Amin.
