بِسْمِ اللّٰهِ اَللّٰهُ أَكْبَرُ
إِنِّي وَجَّهْتُ وَجْهِيَ لِلَّذِي فَطَرَ السَّمٰوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضَ حَنِيفًا وَمَا أَنَا مِنَ الْمُشْرِكِينَ
قُلْ إِنَّ صَلَاتِي وَنُسُكِي وَمَحْيَايَ وَمَمَاتِي لِلّٰهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ ﴿﴾ لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ وَبِذٰلِكَ أُمِرْتُ وَأَنَا أَوَّلُ الْمُسْلِمِينَ
Bismi Llāhi Allāhu akbar.
Innī wajjahtu wajhiya li-lladhī faṭara as-samāwāti wa-l-arḍa ḥanīfan wa-mā anā mina al-mushrikīn.
Qul inna ṣalātī wa-nusukī wa-maḥyāya wa-mamātī li-Llāhi Rabbi al-ʿālamīn. Lā sharīka lahu wa-bi-dhālika umirtu wa-anā awwalu al-muslimīn.
In the name of Allah, Allah is the Greatest.
As one who turns to the truth, I have turned my face toward the One who created the heavens and the earth. I am not one of those who associate partners with Allah. (al-An'am 79)
Say: Truly my salah (prayer), my worship, my life and my death are all for Allah, the Lord of the worlds. He has no partner. This alone is what I have been commanded, and I am the first of the Muslims. (al-An'am 162-163)

Narrated by Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her). When our Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) slaughtered the qurban he would say Bismillah and pronounce the takbir. (Sahih Muslim, Adahi 23/1966; Sahih al-Bukhari, Adahi 2; Sunan Abi Dawud, Dahaya 3)
Our mother Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) relates: "When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) slaughtered the qurban he would say 'Bismillahi Allahu akbar'" (Sahih Muslim, Adahi 23). Saying the basmala while an animal is being slaughtered is obligatory (fard). If the basmala is deliberately omitted, the meat of that animal is not eaten. However, if it is left unsaid out of forgetfulness, the meat of that animal is eaten.
The animal is taken to the place of slaughter without being caused distress. It is laid on its left side so that its face and feet face the qiblah. Its right hind leg is left free and the other three are tied. Facing the qiblah, after saying Bismillah and the takbir, verses 79 and 162-163 of Surah al-An'am are recited.
The verse "Innī wajjahtu wajhiya…" is the proclamation of the belief in divine oneness held by Ibrahim (peace be upon him). The qurban likewise commemorates his submission to the command to sacrifice his son Isma'il (peace be upon him). The verse "Inna ṣalātī wa-nusukī…" is among the important verses revealed in the Qur'an concerning the sacrifice. These verses set out the spirit of the qurban and its dimension of divine oneness.
O Allah, I slaughter this qurban solely for Your good pleasure. I have turned my face toward You and I worship upon divine oneness. My salah, my sacrifice, my life and my death are all dedicated to You. Accept my sacrifice and make me among Your servants who keep alive the tradition of Ibrahim. Make this sacrifice an expiation for me, for my family and for all Muslims, O Lord. Amin.
