Kaynak

Source: Jami' at-Tirmidhi 3451 (hasan (good) hadith).

Narrated by Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would recite these duas when they saw the new crescent. (Jami' at-Tirmidhi, Da'awat 50; Musnad Ahmad V, 329)

Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) relates: "When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saw the new crescent he would say, 'Allāhumma ahillahu ʿalaynā bi-l-amni wa-l-īmāni… Rabbī wa-Rabbuka Allāh'" (Jami' at-Tirmidhi, Da'awat 50). When he saw the crescent the Prophet would also pray: "Allah is the Greatest, praise belongs to Allah alone. O Allah! I ask You for the good of this month, and I take refuge in You from the evil of destiny and from the evil of the Day of Gathering" (Musnad Ahmad V, 329).

The crescent brings the glad tidings of the beginning of a new month. Because the Islamic calendar is lunar, the crescent is watched for on the first night of every month. The crescents of Ramadan and Shawwal in particular carry great importance. When our Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw the crescent he would recite this comprehensive dua, which brings together expressions of gratitude, supplication and trust in Allah all at once.

The phrase "Rabbī wa-Rabbuka Allāh" (O crescent! My Lord and your Lord is Allah) annuls the age of ignorance in which the crescent was worshipped and proclaims that the only Lord is Allah. The noble Companions too would not neglect to recite this dua when they saw the crescent.

Dua in English

O Allah, bring this new month to us with security, faith, safety and Islam. You are the Lord both of this crescent that I see as the moon and of me. Grant us to pass this month in goodness and blessing. Make our provision abundant and forgive our sins. Accept the acts of worship we will perform in this month, O Lord. Amin.
