The one who sneezes:
اَلْحَمْدُ لِلّٰهِ
The one who hears:
يَرْحَمُكَ اللّٰهُ
The one who sneezed, in reply:
يَهْدِيكُمُ اللّٰهُ وَيُصْلِحُ بَالَكُمْ
The one who sneezes: Al-ḥamdu li-Llāh.
The one who hears: Yarḥamuka Allāh.
The one who sneezed, in reply: Yahdīkumu Allāhu wa-yuṣliḥu bālakum.
The one who sneezes: All praise is due to Allah.
The one who hears: May Allah have mercy on you.
The one who sneezed, in reply: May Allah guide you too and set your affairs right.
Source: Sahih al-Bukhari 6224 (sahih hadith).
Narrated by Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him). Our Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When one of you sneezes, let him say 'Alhamdulillah.' Let his brother or his companion say 'Yarhamuka Allah.' And when his brother says 'Yarhamuka Allah,' let him say 'Yahdikumu Allahu wa yuslihu balakum.'" (Sahih al-Bukhari, Adab 126-128)
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) relates: Two men sneezed in the presence of our Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Our Master said "Yarhamuka Allah" to one of them but did not say it to the other. The man to whom he did not say "Yarhamuka Allah" asked: "So-and-so sneezed and you said 'Yarhamuka Allah' to him; I sneezed, why did you not say it to me?" Our Prophet replied: "That man said 'Alhamdulillah,' whereas you did not" (Sahih al-Bukhari, Adab 127; Sahih Muslim, Zuhd 53).
This hadith shows the importance of saying "Alhamdulillah" after sneezing. "Yarhamuka Allah" is not said to a person who does not say "Alhamdulillah." Sneezing is a blessing from Allah, because it allows the body to be cleared of harmful substances. Praising Allah for this blessing and exchanging duas with one another is a beautiful expression of Islamic brotherhood.
Our Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allah loves sneezing and does not love yawning" (Sahih al-Bukhari, Adab 128). Because sneezing is a blessing it is an occasion for praise, whereas yawning, since it arises from laziness, is an occasion for seeking refuge in Allah.
O Allah, when I sneeze I praise You. It is You who gave me this blessing. You cleanse my body of harmful things. Grant me never to forget to praise You. Make it easy for us to exchange duas with our brothers and sisters and to wish good for one another, O Lord. Amin.
