Nawaytu an aṣūma ghadan min shahri Ramaḍāna al-mubāraki farḍan laka yā Allāhu fa-taqabbal minnī innaka anta as-Samīʿu al-ʿAlīm.
O my Allah! I have intended to keep tomorrow's obligatory fast of the noble month of Ramadan. Accept it from me. Surely You are the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.
Source: Sunan Abi Dawud 2454 (sahih hadith).
Narrated by Hafsah (may Allah be pleased with her). Our Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There is no fast for the one who has not settled the intention to fast before dawn." (Sunan Abi Dawud, Sawm 2454; Jami' at-Tirmidhi, Sawm 730; Sunan an-Nasa'i, Siyam 68)
Our mother Hafsah (may Allah be pleased with her) relates: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'There is no fast for the one who does not settle the intention to fast before dawn'" (Sunan Abi Dawud, Sawm 2454; Jami' at-Tirmidhi, Sawm 730). This hadith clearly sets out that intention is a condition for fasting and that it must be made before the time of dawn.
Intention is the turning of the heart toward a matter. According to the Hanafi school, the intention for the Ramadan fast may be made during the night, and it may also be made up until the time of forenoon (duha). For voluntary fasts, however, the intention may be made up until midday. According to the Shafi'i school, the intention for the Ramadan fast must necessarily be made during the night.
In the Noble Qur'an it is stated: "O you who believe! Fasting has been prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you, so that you may attain taqwa" (al-Baqarah 183). Fasting is among the most powerful means to taqwa, that is, to the awareness of responsibility toward Allah. Settling in the heart, while making the intention, that this act of worship is being performed for Allah increases the spiritual value of the fast.
O Allah, I have intended to keep tomorrow's Ramadan fast for Your good pleasure. Accept my fast and make my hunger and thirst a means to Your good pleasure. Protect me from the words and deeds that spoil the fast. Grant me to complete my fast with taqwa, with patience and with gratitude, O Lord. Amin.
