لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا اللّٰهُ وَحْدَهُ لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ لَهُ الْمُلْكُ وَلَهُ الْحَمْدُ وَهُوَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ ﴿﴾ اَلْحَمْدُ لِلّٰهِ ﴿﴾ سُبْحَانَ اللّٰهِ ﴿﴾ لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا اللّٰهُ ﴿﴾ اَللّٰهُ أَكْبَرُ ﴿﴾ لَا حَوْلَ وَلَا قُوَّةَ إِلَّا بِاللّٰهِ
Then: اَللّٰهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِي
Lā ilāha illā llāhu waḥdahū lā sharīka lah, lahu l-mulku wa-lahu l-ḥamdu wa-huwa ʿalā kulli shayʾin qadīr. Al-ḥamdu li-llāhi wa-subḥāna llāhi wa-lā ilāha illā llāhu wa-llāhu akbar, wa-lā ḥawla wa-lā quwwata illā bi-llāh.
Then: Allāhumma ghfir lī.
There is no deity but Allah alone; He has no partner. To Him belongs the dominion and to Him belongs all praise. He has power over all things. All praise be to Allah. Glory be to Allah. There is no deity but Allah. Allah is the greatest. There is no power and no strength except with Allah.
Then: O Allah, forgive me.

Narrated by Ubadah ibn as-Samit (may Allah be pleased with him). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever wakes during the night and recites this dua and then says, 'O Allah, forgive me,' or makes some other dua, his dua is answered. And if he performs wudu and prays, his salah is accepted too." (Sahih al-Bukhari, Tahajjud 21)
Ubadah ibn as-Samit (may Allah be pleased with him) relates: "The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Whoever wakes from sleep and says Lā ilāha illā llāhu waḥdahū... and then Al-ḥamdu li-llāhi wa-subḥāna llāhi..., and after that says, O Allah forgive me, or makes some other dua, his dua is answered. And if he also performs wudu, his salah is accepted'" (Sahih al-Bukhari, Tahajjud 21). This hadith shows that waking in the night is a very precious opportunity for dua.
One who wakes in the silence of the night is alone with his Lord at a time when other people are asleep. This is the moment when the heart is most at peace and the soul most still. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) narrated the hadith: "When the last third of the night begins, our Lord descends to the lowest heaven and says, 'Is there anyone calling upon Me, that I may answer him? Is there anyone asking of Me, that I may give to him? Is there anyone seeking forgiveness, that I may forgive him?'" (Sahih al-Bukhari, Tahajjud 14; Sahih Muslim, Salat al-Musafirin 166).
This dua may be recited on waking at night before going back to sleep, or when rising for the tahajjud salah. The promise that the dua will be answered shows the value of this moment.
O Allah, at this hour of the night I have woken and I remember You. There is no deity but You; the dominion is Yours and all praise is Yours. I glorify You and I praise You. Forgive me and pardon my sins. Turn this waking of mine to good and accept my dua. Make my waking in the night a means of drawing nearer to You, O Lord. Amin.
