اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ أَهْلَ الدِّيَارِ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَالْمُسْلِمِينَ وَإِنَّا إِنْ شَاءَ اللّٰهُ بِكُمْ لَلَاحِقُونَ نَسْأَلُ اللّٰهَ لَنَا وَلَكُمُ الْعَافِيَةَ
As-salāmu ʿalaykum ahla ad-diyāri mina al-muʾminīna wa-l-muslimīn. Wa-innā in shāʾa Allāhu bikum la-lāḥiqūn. Nasʾalu Allāha lanā wa-lakumu al-ʿāfiyah.
Peace be upon you, O believing and Muslim people of these abodes! If Allah wills, we shall soon join you. We ask Allah for well-being for us and for you.

Narrated by Buraydah (may Allah be pleased with him). Our Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would teach the noble Companions to say this when they went to the graveyard. (Sahih Muslim, Jana'iz 104; Sunan an-Nasa'i, Jana'iz 103; Sunan Ibn Majah, Jana'iz 36). In the narration of Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her): (Sahih Muslim, Jana'iz 102; Sunan Abi Dawud, Jana'iz 79)
Buraydah (may Allah be pleased with him) relates: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would teach the noble Companions to recite this dua when they went to the graveyard" (Sahih Muslim, Jana'iz 104). Our mother Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) relates: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would go to the Baqi cemetery and say: 'Peace be upon you, O abode of the believers! You have at last met with what you were told would befall you. If Allah wills, we shall soon join you. O Allah! Forgive those who lie here!'" (Sahih Muslim, Jana'iz 102).
In another narration our Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Peace be upon you, O you who lie in these graves! May Allah forgive us and you. You went before us, and we shall come after you" (Jami' at-Tirmidhi, Jana'iz 59). These three different narrations show the various forms of greeting that may be recited when visiting graves.
Visiting graves is a sunnah visit, made in order to remember death, to renew one's awareness of the hereafter and to pray for deceased Muslims. Our Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had forbidden visiting graves, and then said: "I had forbidden you to visit graves. Now visit them, for this keeps you from becoming attached to this world" (Sahih Muslim, Jana'iz 108). Reciting Surah Ya-Sin at the graveside was also recommended.
Peace be upon you, O believing and Muslim people of these abodes! You went before us, and if Allah wills we shall soon join you. O Allah, forgive those who lie here and have mercy upon them. Widen their graves and fill them with light. Make us share in their prayers as well. Remind us of death and grant us to prepare for the hereafter, O Lord. Amin.
