Kaynak

Source: al-Baqarah 156 | Sahih Muslim, Jana'iz 7 (verse + sahih hadith).

The istirja (Inna li-Llah) portion is verse 156 of al-Baqarah. The dua portion: al-Nawawi, al-Adhkar 132 (from Ibn as-Sunni). Our Prophet also made a similar dua at the death of Abu Salamah (Sahih Muslim, Jana'iz 7).

In the Noble Qur'an it is stated: "When a calamity befalls them, they say, 'We belong to Allah and to Him we shall return.' It is they who receive forgiveness and mercy from their Lord" (al-Baqarah 156-157). This ayah contains the strongest words to be said at the moment of calamity, and it is known as istirja.

When Abu Salamah passed away, our Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went in to him, closed his eyes which had remained open, and said: "Pray for yourselves with nothing but good, for the angels say amin to your prayers" (Sahih Muslim, Jana'iz 7). Then he prayed as follows: "O Allah! Forgive Abu Salamah. Raise his rank to the level of those who are rightly guided! Be a guardian for those he has left behind! Forgive us and forgive him! Widen his grave and fill it with light!"

This dua contains four main requests: asking forgiveness for the deceased, the raising of his rank, Allah's taking care of those he has left behind, and his grave being wide and filled with light. Rather than losing one's composure and saying negative words on hearing news of a death, reciting this dua is the most beautiful consolation and deed both for the one who has died and for those left behind.

Dua in English

O Allah, we belong to You and to You we shall return. Forgive our brother who has passed away and pardon his sins. Raise his rank together with the people of guidance. Be a guardian for the family he has left behind and grant them patience. Widen his grave and fill it with light. Encompass both us and him with Your forgiveness, O Lord. Amin.
